This black and white portrait of a massive live oak in Garner State Park captures more than just the beauty of its shape — it preserves the enduring spirit of a place where generations gather, pause, and connect. Stripped of color, the eye is drawn to the elegant sweep of each branch, the contrast between shadow and bark, and the quiet presence of weathered picnic tables and scattered stone.
I took this photo during a deeply personal hike through the park with my 85-year-old mother and my daughter — three generations making our way beneath this incredible tree. We’ve walked these trails together over the years, and every visit feels like returning to a living memory.
In monochrome, the emotion deepens. This version speaks to legacy and time — how trees, like families, stretch across decades and hold space for our stories. The Gathering Tree in black and white honors resilience, rootedness, and the bonds that outlast seasons.
